Hugo Estecahandy is PhD candidate on the geopolitical stakes of cryptocurrencies and their mining industries, with a particular focus on Russia and Central Asia. Adopting a geopolitical approach, the research aims to analyse the factors shaping the localisation of mining activities (energy-related, climatic, technical, etc.), the diversity of actors involved, and the multifaceted repercussions of the development of this industry across different scales. The growing reliance on cryptocurrencies and the expansion of their production industries at an industrial scale raise social, economic, and security-related issues, thereby calling for a multidimensional geographical approach encompassing both physical space and cyberspace.
