He is Professor at the Department of Informatics at the University of Zurich (UZH) and Sustainability Delegate of UZH. He got his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Hamburg and has been researching sustainability aspects of ICT for more than 20 years. He authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in this field. Lorenz is the initiator of the international conference series ICT4S, Information and Communication Technologies for Sustainability, which gathers the last researches on area such as ICT for Energy Efficiency, Life Cycle Assessment of ICT, Green IT, Green Information Systems, Environmental Informatics, Energy Informatics, Sustainable HCI, or Sustainable Software Engineering.

What is the digital transformation and why is it changing our society so fast? Can we leverage the transformational power of ICT to contribute to sustainable development? The talk presents conceptual frameworks to classify positive and negative impacts of ICT with regard to sustainability, an overview on studies estimating the global greenhouse gas reduction potential of future ICT use cases, and draws some conclusions about how we can align digitalization with sustainable development, in particular climate protection.
